In 2017 we partnered with Ana and Erwin who run a weaving co-op in the village, to build a natural dye workshop, ‘Bale Warna Alam’. It is a place to reinvigorate local natural dyes, innovate new techniques, produce naturally dyed cotton for use and for sale and create employment. This is just the start of its potential with a number of other plans in the pipeline.
Pringgasela is a traditional weaving village in the foothills of Mount Rinjani, Lombok. The main industries that support the village are farming and weaving. Every female is taught to weave and the majority of homes have a weaving loom. Many families in the village lived below the poverty line.
Sadly our project in Lombok took a major hit with the earthquake in August 2018. Our building was not damaged but became housing for people who lost their homes. With the support of our customers we have been able to offer some assistance building temporary housing.
We hope ‘Bale Warna Alam’ will be up and running again sometime in 2019.
